Where do I start?

Starting a decluttering project can be overwhelming. Whether it is an entire room or just the pile of papers piling up on your dining table, there are some basic steps to follow that will help you get
started successfully.

  • Don't run out and buy a bunch of storage containers before you sort the clutter. Until you know what, if anything, you need to store, there is no need to buy containers.
  • Set an appointment with yourself (and your family if some of the clutter is theirs!) and stick to it. Even if it is spending 1/2 hour each evening for a few days, make it happen!
  • Begin sorting things into three categories: keep, trash, donate/sell
  • I usually have a couple large storage totes that I keep emptied for sorting items.
  • If you are working on an entire room, divide it into sections so it doesn't become too overwhelming.
  • If you need a break from sorting, take the "trash" to your trash containers or go through the keep pile and sort them according to who they belong to in your home or put them away if they have a designated home.
  • Don't get frustrated. Decluttering won't happen all at once. Baby steps!
In my next post, I'll give you some hints for setting up systems to keep clutter at bay.
